Mary Anning was one of the greatest fossil hunters who ever lived! She grew up in Lyme Regis on the south coast of England, where the cliffs are full of fossils from millions of years ago.
When she was just 12 years old, Mary and her brother Joseph discovered the first correctly identified Ichthyosaur skeleton — a huge sea reptile! She went on to discover the first Plesiosaur and the first British Pterosaur (a flying reptile).
Even though many scientists of her time didn't take her seriously because she was a woman from a poor family, Mary taught herself geology and anatomy. Today she is recognised as one of the most important figures in the history of palaeontology.
"She sells sea shells on the sea shore" — this famous tongue twister is believed to be about Mary Anning!
